5 Healthy Habits to Incorporate into Your Work Day
posted on August 2, 2016 | by Amanda Holstein
What I hated most about working a typical 9-5 desk job was the toll it took on my health. From sitting at a desk for eight hours straight to snacking on candy around the office, feeling lethargic (both mentally & physically) was a common theme. Even now, running my own business and making my own schedule, it’s easy to fall back into some of those unhealthy habits. So I’ve put together a list of super simple and effective ways to make your health a priority throughout the work day.
1. Snack Healthy
Because of my incredibly strong sweet tooth, I’m always craving sugary treats throughout the day. Although candy and chocolate are satisfying in the moment, they make it so difficult to stay energized and focused. When I opt for healthier snacks, like yogurt and granola (still sweet!), I find myself able to last much longer without wanting to crash.
After trying many different kinds of yogurt over the years, I have found one that seriously tastes like nothing I’ve ever had before. It’s SOOOO creamy, has that perfect combo of sweet & tart, and actually tastes like real, natural ingredients. And I’m so pumped I got to partner with them on today’s post! It’s noosa yoghurt, honestly the most incredible yoghurt I’ve ever tasted. Seriously, ask my boyfriend and he’ll tell you just how obsessed I am with these things. Plus, they make my kind of flavors — coconut, strawberry rhubarb, and tart cherry are some of my favorites! I was also surprised that I really like their lemon and key lime flavors as well. Honestly, they taste like dessert. Add some granola, and you have my perfect snack.
2. Keep a water bottle by your desk.
I’m finally starting to make this a habit (though it wasn’t until I bought a pretty water bottle that it stuck). If you’re feeling drowsy throughout the day or loosing energy, chances are you’re dehydrated. Try keeping a water bottle by your desk at all times and remember to sip it throughout the day. My goal is to refill it every hour (hey, I’m a newbie!).
3. Get some sun.
Staying in a dark office all day can get really depressing, so make sure you get outside! Take a few minutes to just sit in the sun, letting that vitamin D soak in. Grab a friend or just sit by yourself, with no distractions and enjoy that sunshine. You’d be surprised how reenergized you’ll feel after!
4. Take physical breaks.
Between the strain on your eyes, your back, and even your wrists (from typing!), it’s important to take physical breaks throughout the day. I don’t just mean sitting on the couch in the break room, but also moving your body and getting the blood flowing. I’m a huge fan of going for walks when I need a break. The movement, the change of scenery, and the break from the computer screen are all really helpful!
5. Take mental breaks.
I don’t just mean taking a break from work and playing on Facebook. Give your mind time to truly zone out and relax. If you like to meditate, I definitely recommend incorporating that into your workday. Otherwise, try sitting in a park or even a quiet room, closing your eyes, and just taking long deep breaths. When you’re working hard, it can feel like your mind is going a million miles an hour. So giving it a rest is super important! Plus, it’s a great way to destress.

Noosa is my favorite. I love the blood orange and passionfruit flavors. I tried the blackberry serrano flavor the other day but it was not my favorite.

I’ve been wanting to try Noosa! If you haven’t already, give Siggi’s a shot as well – it’s one of my favs.

That’s right, it’s important to keep track of how much water you drink per day in order to meet your daily requirement. Before doing this, make sure that the tap water is drinkable. There is more information here https://waterguides.org/blog/orlando-tap-water-quality/ on how to do it.
