Blogging 101: 5 Things to Include on Your About Page
posted on June 27, 2016 | by Amanda Holstein
If you’re a blogger and you’re not quite sure what to put on their About page, you’re not alone. Like everything else when it comes to blogging, there are no rules. You can really make it what you want. Some choose to make theirs more visual while others include tons of written information. Whatever you do, make sure it aligns with your brand, keep in mind the new readers and potential clients that are most likely looking at that page, and don’t forget about these five things.
1. Your Blog Story
Readers and clients alike want to know how your blog came to be. Share what made you start a blog, when you started it, how it has transitioned overtime, what your goals are, what message you’re trying to get across, etc. All of this helps paint a more well-rounded picture so that your readers can relate to you on a more personal level and clients can understand your brand better.
2. A One Sentence Description of Your Blog
While you should certainly include the full story of how your blog came to be, it’s also important to provide one sentence that clearly and concisely describes your blog (i.e. your brand). This sentence should explain what your blog offers and what makes in different — and in a way that truly represents your brand. This is extremely helpful for new readers and potential clients to grasp what your blog is about as quickly as possible.
3. Your Demographic Info
The most common information brands want to know about you specifically is your basic demographic information. This includes your age, gender, marital status, education, and more. While you don’t need to list these things out (because that might look weird to your readers), I recommend incorporating this information into your personal story. Check out an example of how I’ve done so on my About page.
4. Your Current Status
It’s also important to share where you are at this moment in your life. Where you live, what you do, if you have kids, pets, etc. While of course this is helpful for readers to get to know you, it’s also incredibly useful for potential clients.
Brands are often looking for very specific things, like whether you have kids under the age of five or what city you live in or if you have a boyfriend. Why would they want to know these random things? Because perhaps they are looking for bloggers with kids who are still in diapers to help promote a new diaper brand. Or maybe a luggage company wants to know if you travel a lot. You never know what a brand might be looking for, so include as much relevant, current information about yourself as possible!
5. A Clear Photo of Yourself
If you are ever featured on another blog or website, the person featuring you will most likely go to your About page to find a photo of you. So I highly recommend including a photo of yourself that really shows who you are — one that you wouldn’t mind representing you around the internet. I would also make sure it is high-res (at least 1800 px wide — your content well should size it down so it looks normal on your page). Why? So that anyone can save that image and use it at any size they need on their own site.

Hi Amanda,
I’m in the process of finishing my blog design, and for some reason the “about me” page feels like the hardest one to write. It was really helpful to read this post and get a better understanding of what the important parts to add would be and why. I’m really enjoying your blog and all your post topics!
Thanks,
Kaitlin
