Now that we’ve finally taken control of our skincare routine, I think it’s about time we do the same for our hair. All the things we do to our hair, from straightening, to curling, to throwing it up in a top knot, can really damage it over time. So I decided to pick my hair stylist’s brain to get the best tips on haircare. Let me tell you, I learned a lot. But for now, I’ve got 5 ways to take care of your hair below, and I’ll be sure to deliver more hair tips your way ASAP!
1. Shampoo 3 times a week
I’m sure you’ve heard this one and wondered how this works. Skipping shampoos doesn’t mean you need to skip the shower all together. You can wet your hair and even condition it, just skip the shampoo. Shampoo tends to dry out your hair (like soap does to your skin), so it’s not necessary to do everyday. Let your hair produce it’s natural oils and give it a break from the shampoo a few times a week.
2. Apply shampoo just to your roots
You don’t need to use as much shampoo as you think. In fact, you really only need to use half because you should focus the product on your roots rather than your ends. Since shampoo can dry out your hair, you want to avoid lathering it on your ends. The proper way to apply shampoo is to lather just your roots. If you need a heavier lather, just add water. When you rinse your hair, the shampoo will flow down the rest of your hair and gently wash your ends.
3. Apply conditioner just to your ends
Make sure to squeeze out all the excess water before applying your conditioner. Just like with your shampoo, you only need to use half as much conditioner as you’re probably using. Only apply the product to your ponytail (the driest part of your hair). Apply any extra product that’s left on your hands to your roots and the rest of your head. Let the product sit for 1-2 minutes so that it can really soak in and repair the hair.
4. Use a deep conditioning mask twice a week
Just as you would use a mask on your skin a few times a week, try using a deep conditioning mask on your hair twice a week. From all the damage we cause our hair from flat ironing it and braiding it and more, it’s a good idea to add a little something extra to your weekly routine to really condition and repair your hair.
5. Always use a heat protecting spray
If you’re going to use one product on your hair, it should be a heat protecting spray. Heat is the most damaging thing to your hair, and it’s so easy to spray a little product on before using your hot tools, so there’s no excuse! It’s a quick and easy thing you can do everyday to protect your hair from further damage.

These are all great tips, and I’ve heard them before, but the only one I really follow is conditioning only the ends, I need to be better and start putting them all to practice!

These are absolutely great tips, Amanda. You’re awesome, as always.
I always wonder, though, maybe your hairstylist told you: does Wen count as shampooing? Like, can you use Wen on a daily basis, or is it also a bit harsh? I’ve always wondered about stylist’s stance on that one (Wen or any cleansing conditioner, for that matter, including the new one by Macademia Oil)
