If you haven’t spent much time in San Francisco, you might be surprised to know that the weather here is nothing like the rest of California. It’s not 75º and sunny all year round, nor is it foggy and rainy all year round as the rumors say. Summer is actually the coldest time of the year, and September through November is our best season. Basically, none of it makes sense. So I teamed up with Old Navy to put together this guide on what to wear when visiting San Francisco depending on the time of year.
September through November
As I mentioned, these few months in San Francisco are beautiful. I definitely recommend visiting during this time. It’s blue skies everyday, the sun is out, and the weather tends to stay in the low 70s for most of the day. This is pretty much the only time of year when you can pull off mini dresses and shorts, so take advantage! This casual mini dress from Old Navy is perfect for San Francisco during this time of year. It’s versatile enough to go from day to night and great for layering. It tends to get chilly when the sun goes down, so I recommend bringing a cardigan or light jacket with you.
December through August
The rest of the year is pretty much fall all year round. The days can range from blue skies and high sixties to foggy and mid fifties. My typical uniform consists of jeans, ankle boots, a light top, and a sweater or light jacket. This combo will get you through the rainy winter, the windy spring, and the foggy summer. Since we’re still in California, I like to wear lighter colors like white and tan. This extra long cardigan is perfect for San Francisco weather and easy to layer over just about any outfit.

I love both of these looks! Having visited SF many times in September-November, I agree, it’s truly a magical time to go. Layering is key in that city!

This post comes at the perfect time! I absolutely love SF, but I remember visiting for the first time with my parents in July several years ago and it was so cold, we had to stop and buy sweatshirts and scarves!
I have a trip planned in early November to visit my best friend who moved there, and I. CAN’T. WAIT.

Post authorIt’s more like what you see on the website, but I’d say it falls somewhere in between.
